Newcastle should get relegated.Yes, what I said. They should. If what was announced today is true, Newcastle will do well to be relegated. Because Alan Shearer is back! Before I gush about him, let me first lay out just exactly how smart the parties involved are. First off: the man himself. Alan Shearer could not have chosen a better time to schedule his return. At this point is either the saviour or the hope. If Newcastle stays up, he'll be lauded as the saviour to preserve Newcastle's top-flight status. If Newcastle gets relegated, Alan Shearer will be the hope; having Alan Shearer in charge with an adoring fanbase ensures that even at Championship level the fans will be pouring in to show him their utmost support. And what better than to start out at a club with the fanbase of Newcastle and playing at the Championship level? It'll be a great way to gain managerial experience (think Roy Keane). And unlike Roy Keane, Shearer has the mental strength to be there. Hence, Shearer's came at a time where things couldn't get any worse; Newcastle's facing relegation. Its like entering the stock market at a bottom; you can only go up from there. Next up, Mike Ashley, the eternal villian. He has catapulted from saviour to sucker, put his club up for sale with no results and seen the value of his investment dwindling as rapidly as his networth (he is no longer a billionaire). So now he has indeed played the final card in an attempt to get back into the good books of the fans, the players, and perhaps the accountants So, the impact: Alan Shearer gets a hero's welcome into a job which is so easy. All he brings to the club, besides his inexperience, is a moral booster. Tactically, there can be little change; what he essentially accomplishes is the role of a cheerleader. We really need some passion to be infused right now; perhaps that good-for-nothing Michael Owen would finally get his act on and focus on club before dreaming of turning out for England again. Mike Ashley will be looking for a boost in ticket sales; everyone would wanna watch the new Shearer team, if anything to give him the support that he commands. Perhaps someday he'll be forgiven for Keegan's action (which I don't see as a big problem in the first place). The fans, well, they are definitely gonna love it! My only hope is that the players feel the vibe as well and put in performances befitting a team of such calibre. Alan Shearer is honestly a cut above Kevin Keegan. I really never liked Keegan that much. True, he brought about an era of success which was unlike what was seen in recent club history. But he was a quitter; I'm amazed that people don't note that about him. Give me Bobby Robson; he did not challenge for the title, but he built a team that was consistent and brought the likes of Oliver Bernard into the Champions League. Alan Shearer was loyal and devoted; he stayed with Newcastle instead of going with Man United and winning trophies. As such, ever since he left Blackburn where he won the Premiership, he has nothing to show for his loyalty. It devolved into how he actually offered Michael Owen his number 9 jersey to get him to join. Seriously? Michael Owen isn't half the striker Alan Shearer is, and is even less so in terms of attitude. So why do I want Newcastle to be relegated? Well, I don't wholeheartedly want them to drop, but it isn't all downside. At least, if they drop, you'll want Shearer to be at the helm. The thing is, if Newcastle stay up, what next? Shearer isn't likely to want to stay on for the job; the Premiership can be tough. No quality manager will want to come in and be a seatwarmer for the eventual successor (unless his surname is Goh). And even if he takes the job there's a chance that he may screw the job up. If they drop, no one is going to blame Shearer. In fact he's going to consider the job seriously because it's going to be alot easier to secure promotion then to finish with a respectable Premier League standing. At the end of the day, this is nothing but good news. Trust the circus of Newcastle to come up with another class act. Now you know why I love them so!
